These Infinite Spaces

The eternal silence of these infinite spaces fills me with dread (Pascal)

I don't recall where our second gig was. Somewhere east I think near the cost - perhaps in the St Geroge area. Yet I have a clear memory of the venue interior, and the gig we played that night. It was our first gig with Graeme, and it went off. For whatever reason, we did far better than we had at Heathcote Club. I remember playing and thinking, "This is good! This is working!" It was a taste of things to come.

I should take a moment to tell you our set list. It changed over the following year, with songs added and deleted, but here is every one that I can remember -

Tojo (Hoodoo Gurus)
Good Times (Hoodoo Gurus)
My Girl (Hoodoo Gurus)
What's My Scene (Hoodoo Gurus)
Axegrinder (Hoodoo Gurus)
Come Anytime (Hoodoo Gurus)
Wild Thing/Louie Louie/Twist & Shout (Medley)
Rock 'n Roll All Night (Kiss)
Sweet Child O Mine (Guns and Roses)
Patience (Guns and Roses)
Eagle Rock (Daddy Kool)
Read About It (Midnight Oil)
King of the Mountain (Midnight Oil)
My Sharona (The Knack)
Run To Paradise (Choirboys)
Unguarded Moment (The Church)
Under the Milky Way (The Church)
Hippy Hippy Shake (Georgia Satellites)
Keep Your Hands to Yourself (Georgia Satellites)
Dogs are Talking (The Angels)
I Love Rock and Roll (Joan Jett and the Blackhearts)
Mumma Mia (ABBA)
You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC)
I'm Alone With You Tonight (The Sunnyboys)
Jumpin' Jack Flash (The Rolling Stones)
Rock 'n Roll (Led Zepplin)
Roadhouse Blues (The Doors)
She's So Fine (The Easybeats)
Rock 'n Roll Music (Chuck Berry)
Johnny B Goode (Chuck Berry)
Come Up And See Me (Nick Barker and the Reptiles)

Wow, what a great list! I don't think there is a song on there that I didn't like. It was real guitar music too, a big step away from the synth-pop we'd done with the orginal Catch.

Back to the story. Graham had made a strong debut and the band was coming together. And then we scored another local gig, at a place called the Sutherland United Services Club (everyone called it the SUS Club). I'd driven by it a hundred times and never been in. Nothing spectacular on the outside, but we'd heard it was an ok venue.

I don't think we expected much. In fact, this gig would change everything.
