Wisdom, Courage and Temperance

Speaking of virtue and philosophy, I've been re-reading "Sophie's World" recently. Terrific book. In one part, the author describes Plato's take on virtue. He believed that humans consisted of three parts - reason, will and desire. Each of these had a corresponding virtue - wisdom for reason, courage for will, and temperance for desire. The truly virtuous person would attempt to develop all three.
Got me to thinking - how do we become more virtuous? How do I grow in wisdom? How do I get more courage? How do I develop temperance? Serious questions.
