Surprised by Joy

Surprised by joy — impatient as the Wind
I turned to share the transport — Oh! with whom
But Thee, deep buried in the silent tomb,
That spot which no vicissitude can find?
Love, faithful love, recalled thee to my mind —
But how could I forget thee? Through what power,
Even for the least division of an hour,
Have I been so beguiled as to be blind
To my most grievous loss?--That thought's return
Was the worst pang that sorrow ever bore,
Save one, one only, when I stood forlorn,
Knowing my heart's best treasure was no more;
That neither present time, nor years unborn
Could to my sight that heavenly face restore.

Happy Reformation Day!

Reading...

Finished "Around the World in 80 Days". A fun book! Just started on "Moby Dick", which is intriguing, but fairly dense going...

I'll Fly Away

Some glad morning when this life is o'er,
I'll fly away;
To a home on God's celestial shore,
I'll fly away

Chorus
I'll fly away, Oh Glory
I'll fly away;
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I'll fly away

When the shadows of this life have gone,
I'll fly away;
Like a bird from prison bars has flown,
I'll fly away

Chorus

Just a few more weary days and then,
I'll fly away;
To a land where joy shall never end,
I'll fly away

Kobo screen broken

My Kobo eReader's screen has broken, and I've only had it a couple of weeks. I pulled it out of my bag this morning, and there faint lines and blocks all over the display, as well as blank areas. I did a bit of googling and this seems to be a common problem, fixable only by replacement. I'm so disappointed! Luckily I have my receipt. I'll take it back to Angus and Robertson tomorrow and see what they have to say. Stay tuned.

Ethics can lead to faith

MJ writes an excellent piece on the Ethics classes. I wish all of our responses could have been as thoughtful, clever and winsome.

Reading

Read a quarter of "Paradise Lost", and am going to give it a rest for a while. Now reading "Around the World in 80 Days", and finding it utterly charming.

Joke

Two Zen monks were walking down the road.
First monk says: "These pine trees are magnificent."
The second monk slaps him across the face.
First monk: "Why did you do that?"
"I'm a Zen monk so I can get away with all kinds of weird stuff like that."

Bought an eReader

It's a Kobo. I reckon it's great. I'm seeing lots of eReaders on the train these days. I think we are on the eve of the equivalent mass shift toward digital consumption that we saw with music a few years back...

The economics of obesity

Interesting article from Gittins, including this gruesome fact -

Although healthcare spending for obese people is at least 25 per cent higher than for someone of normal weight, and increases rapidly as people get fatter, severely obese people are likely to die eight to 10 years earlier, so their shorter lives mean they incur lower healthcare costs over their lifetime. It's even greater than the saving on smokers.

Rules for writers

From the Guardian

Morning Herald (London, England), Wednesday, November 1, 1786

"A very fair question to the present administration; Pray, gentlemen, by what rule of justice do you dare to dispossess the natives of their property and authority in Botany Bay? Does the spirit or letter of the constitution of this country warrant such an outrage? Have you even the most distant claim to a right of sovereignty there; and is not such an attack on the harmless natives, a most wanton stretch of arbitrary power, and an exercise of cruelty and injustice that will stain the glory of England forever?"

Strikes gold

After an hour of searching through 18th century newspapers, I found this -

...Be pleased to give my kind love to my honoured grandmother, and all my cousins; also to my uncle and aunt; and thank them for their recommndation of me to the Rev. Mr. Johnson, our chaplain. Tell them, he has already shown me some kindness on their account. I may thank him for this opportunity of sending to you; for he was so good as to make th kind offer to any of us, who wished to write to our friends, saying that he would undertake to send our letters to England...
