God is back...

...in the media

Saw Sherlock Holmes

Enjoyed it. Downey and Law were outstanding. Pacing was a little slow, though.

Two Wills of God

A very good post from Mark

The voice of Top Cat died

Remember that cartoon?

Hope you are having a good Christmas break

I've been having a great time with the family, it's been a blast. But spare a thought, too, for those for whom Christmas is a lonely time...

Jesus-era house found in Nazareth

More info here. Most of you will think "big deal", but I had an atheist recently tell me that Nazareth was not inhabited around this time. So this is kinda nice...

A study on stuttering

An excellent report on the ABC. The reporter is a friend of mine, as is the man featured in the story.

A mate of mine performed this original song at the Excelsior open mike last night. The sterling camera work is mine...

The Christmas Message

Ross Cameron writes about Jesus. He muffs a few historical points, and gets the central message wrong, but it's some interesting speculation on the sociological impact of Christianity...

In the Chute

Mark Hadley reviews the first event. Sounds like a very good time

UFC 110

This is the first UFC in Australia. I was thinking of going along - too late! Tickets sold out as soon as it was announced. I expected it might be a bit of a tame card, but far from it! There are some great fighters coming down under - Nogeuira, Velasquez, Wanderlai Silva, Bisping, Cro Cop, Jardine, Joe Daddy, CB Dolloway, phew! Plus Australia's own George Soteropolis and Elvis Sinosic (who I trained under for a little while). It looks set to be a REALLY great night...

The Carbon Accounting Rip-off

A fundamental flaw in emissions accounting sees Australia get the short end of the stick

CitiGroup to repay $20b

CitiGroup, one of the most high profile casualties of the GFC, is repaying half of the bailout money it received from the US Treasury. Despite public perception, the bailout package was not a bunch of hand-outs for big corporates - it was effectively a series of gigantic loans, which the recipients have to pay interest on, and which ultimately have to be repaid.

Guitar Chords for Hymns

This little site has now clocked up over 200,000 hits in about 18 months. I've actually had people offer me money for the domain. Amazing.

Renzo Gracie joins the UFC

It's reported that he has signed a six fight deal. There will be huge interest in having a Gracie in the UFC again, can't wait to see him fight.

Moore College

Moore College has a new website, and it looks sensational

Latest ACR

The latest Australian Church Record is now out. Interesting editorial about male victims of domestic abuse. It's not really a problem we talk much about, but perhaps we should. As I think about it, lots of guys I know have been with occasionally violent women. We don't treat that sort of thing very seriously, really, thinking perhaps that most blokes are able to handle themselves in that sort of situation. But more serious, perhaps, are the men who are the victims of sustained emotional and verbal abuse, as in the case of Anthony Sherna, who strangled his wife to death after 20 years of abuse. He copped 10-14 years for manslaughter, with the court acknowledging he showed signs of "battered woman syndrome" (perhaps they'll have to change the name).

Julie & Julia

Saw this last night with the girl at The Orpheum. It was pretty good, though a little long... Hoping to check out Zombieland soon, though I'm guessing that will be a girl-less night...

Kristina Keneally is a fairly outspoken Catholic

Just like Tony Abbott. I wonder if she will cop as much grief for her faith as he has?

Here's some video of her

I'm guessing she's had coaching for her accent - you can hear her fighting the US twang. She is just 40 years old.

Kristina Keneally is NSW's first female premier

No, I'd never heard of her either. Turns out she was born in the US and was educated there - I wonder if she has an accent? Her husband is the nephew of Thomas Keneally, one of Australia's finest authors.

Unpacking Forgiveness

Sandy gives a teaser of a book I am keen to read -

Its critical insight is that despite what so many blithely claim, forgiveness is not unconditional! Brauns begins with this simple but profound principle: "God expects believers to forgive others in the way that he forgave them" (p. 44).

For example, Colossians 3:13 speaks of "bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive." (my emphasis). Furthermore, God does not forgive us without our repentance (e.g. Acts 20:21).

Likewise, human forgiveness is not automatic. The key verse here is Luke 17:3: "If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him" (NIV, my emphasis). So we do not offer 'cheap grace' to people who refuse to acknowledge sin. Of course, we may still act in loving and kind ways towards them, though they be our enemies. Yet we are not obliged to pretend all is okay.

Baptise those babies!

Acts 29 Oz

Ben writes a very constructive review of their first Boot Camp on the Sola Panel. This review has already been widely linked, and will strongly influence how Acts 29 are perceived in SydAng land...

Congratulations!

Congrats to Luke & Amy, expecting their first child. Well done guys!
