A real-life example of "The Terminal"

Church Growth

Sandy makes a gutsy comment regarding church growth -
The first principle [from Zac's book] urges pastors to focus on conversion, rather than transfer growth... I felt the challenge of this critical pointer, given that the 'success' I've had since arriving at St Michael's has largely been via transfer growth.
We need more honesty like that...

Wuthering Heights

Watched the first part this evening and enjoyed it a lot. Rather creepy. That grave-digging scene - was that *really* in the book..??

Capitalism: A Love Story

Watched Michael Moore's latest film tonight with a mate. It was a reasonably entertaining flick, though the subject matter was pretty dry. He did not convince me that capitalism really is a very terrible thing, and I don't know that Moore really believes that himself given his love affair with the American working middle class of the 50s. What he does show is that the real enemy is greed, a human constant which cuts across political parties and economic theories.

Climate Change - It's too late

This paper confirms a long held belief of mine - that if rapid climate change is anthropogenic, then there is absolutely nothing we can do about it -
We moderns have become accustomed to the idea that we can modify our environment to suit our needs, and have acted accordingly for some three hundred years. We are now discovering that our intoxicating belief that we can conquer all has come up against a greater force, the Earth itself. We are discovering that humans cannot regulate the climate; the climate regulates us. The prospect of runaway climate change challenges our technological hubris and our Enlightenment faith in reason. The Earth may soon demonstrate that, ultimately, it cannot be tamed and that the human urge to master nature has only roused a slumbering beast.

More study

I'm seriously thinking about doing a masters degree, to progress my career and also for my own stimulation. It wouldn't be next year, as I'm determined to finish my book, but possibly in 2011. The course I'm looking at is only 8 subjects, and I could possibly get exempted from 1 or 2 of those. The cost is significant, but I believe the fees are tax deductible? Anyway, it would be spread out over a number of years...

Women & Boards & Committees

Karin calls for more women on the SA boards & committees. I support this, and hope more can done. I will make this comment though - I've noticed that women are sometimes less interested in committees than the blokes are. At the parish level, it has been very difficult to find women who want to serve on parish council, and I don't think any woman has ever wanted to serve on our finance/property committees. Individual preference plays a part here...

Gone Chrome

After I upgraded to Firefox 3.5.2, it started going slow. Real slow. The reason I dumped IE for FF in the first place was because IE had become a bloated, slow-moving software monster. Now FF seems to be going down that path as well. Well, it was going slow on my computer at least. So I've installed Google Chrome. Nice, very nice. Slick and fast. Goodbye FF. You forgot what made you a success in the first place...

lols

A five-year-old Texan boy has reportedly killed a 3.7-metre, 365-kilogram alligator that was 20 times his size.

Simon Hughes shouted "holy moly" when he saw the beast, but killed it with a single shot from his "junior-sized .410-gauge shotgun", the Houston Chronicle said.

"I wasn't even afraid," he told a local TV network. "Next year I'm going to kill me a bigger alligator."

Networks - men and women

Narelle discusses the different ways in which men and women network. Really fascinating stuff -

I have observed that there is a vast difference between men and women in the way in which men are able to use their networks to pursue appointments, uncover possibilities and even to be able to persuade leaders to rethink what they might need in the light of what they as applicants can offer.
