New Church Building

We spent last Sunday in our newly renovated church building. Such a relief to be back after meeting off-site for 60 weeks! They have done a marvelous job with it too, especially the meshing of the old and the new. Everyone has commented about the spectacular stained glass windows elevated about the room, and back lit with LEDs. I'll post links to some pictures once they are published. Official opening will be the 11th October, everyone is welcome.

Sovereign Grace, Sydney

They are holding their intro night on the 30th October. It's in Pennant Hills - I wonder if that is where they are going to plant? If so, it's right in the middle of Sydney's bible belt. Makes sense, though part of me was hoping they'd choose somewhere a bit more on the cutting edge. On the other hand, they are very well placed to pick up people coming out of Hillsong's back door, the sort who might be lost to the faith for good otherwise. Sovereign Grace will appeal to those who want reformed theology and a high view of scripture, but in a more emotional and experiential context than you will, perhaps, find at many Anglican churches.

Update: Dave has just told me the plant will be in Hornsby...

Watched an interesting doco this evening on a bloke called Rodney Banks. He is an Aussie, now living in the US, who founded a robotics company called iRobot. Some folk predict that there is going to be a robotics revolution over the next 10 years...

500,000 Hits

My blog counter clicked over the half million mark a few days ago. I started tracking hits in May 06, so that averages about 3,000 hits/week during that time. I've peaked at quite a bit more than that, and long time readers will know that I'm currently on a bit of a low ebb as regards output. Partly that has been because I've been writing for SA every week, partly it's because of my book, and more recently it's because I've been investing a fair chunk of time in professional development. Where it goes from here, I really don't know. But I'm not planning on going anywhere...

Easy come, easy go

Within two years of retirement, 78 percent of NFL players are bankrupt or in severe financial distress... How is this possible? The minimum salary for rookies in 2009 is $310,000. That jumps to $460,000 for two year veterans. How can men who earn so much have so little after retirement?  More here

A good evening

Met up with a couple of old mates last night. We spent the evening on a balcony overlooking the Parramatta river, drinking port, smoking cigars, talking about anything and everything. Good times. Should really try and do this sort of thing more often...

New Job

I'm starting a new job in a few weeks time. It seems to be an exciting role, and I'm looking forward to the new challenge. Things have been a bit quiet around here as I've gone through the whole recruitment process, which is emotionally draining. I've also been doing some reading for the purpose of professional development, which has taken up great gobs of time, and I'm still writing for SA every week. My poor little book has ground to a halt the last month.

Will probably take some time for me to settle into the new position. Bear with me, normal service will be resumed...sometime...

Grotta Capri

Went to the Grotta Capri on Saturday night with some friends to celebrate the girl's birthday. The venue was featured on the recent Underbelly TV series. It must have the ugliest interior I've ever seen, yet it is also weirdly charming. We had a great night, and the restaurant is worth checking out.

Annandale Village

Here is the sign I mentioned below - http://www.christiansinthemedia.org/photos/annandalevillage-smallest.jpg

New Church Name

To coincide with our new building, our church has decided to re-brand. After a fairly long process, which included a good chunk of consultation with the church, the elders have decided to rename us "Village Church, Annandale". Our suburb is called "Annandale Village" on one of the signs that the council has erected on Johnson St, so it makes some sense locally. "Village" also has a strong community sort of feeling, which is what we are aiming for. My own preference was for "Annandale Anglican Church" or "Annandale Community Church". But I am comfortable with the "Village"...

Shout out to Andre

My good mate Andre has just landed an awesome new job. I'm so pleased for him! Sad part is that he will be moving cities - he and his family will be sadly missed by many of us. That's life, isn't it? Always change, always new seasons coming, old seasons passing away...
