The Trueman Show

Carl Trueman seems to be the man of the moment here in Sydney. I like his take on Reformed Christianity...it's very humanising...

Pfft. Liked him before he was cool.

It only further confirms my suspicions that Sydney Anglicanism is on the short road to Presbyterianism. Let's hope that the diocese can take on some of CT's opinions on Covenant Theology and Psalmody!

Ha. I hear this all the time, but I've never seen much evidence for it. When Driscoll was big news, were we on the road to becoming charismatic Baptists?

I would have thought the prevailing Biblical theology fit in pretty well with Reformed Covenantalism. Where do you see the tensions?

I'd say yes, there is a large proportion of Sydney Anglicanism which is on the road to becoming charismatic baptists. No kidding.

Sydney is far more influenced by the work of guys like Don Carson and Moo on New Covenant Theology than Reformed Covenant Theology. There are a few who go against the grain (Glenn Davies and others), but Moore's emphasis is strongly NCT.

The tensions are apparent in areas such as the theology of the church meeting, the continuity of the law and areas like baptism. When did you last hear a covenantal defence of baptism? One of my mates at SMBC got a hold of Glenn Davies' presentation for a covenantal baptism and is currently considering becoming a Pressie.

Ok, I get the sacramental differences, and I agree that SA has been weak on the sacraments.

But can you tell me a little bit more about the continuity of the law? And what are the differences in the theology of church meeting?

Reformed Covenant theology has seen more of a continuity between the OT law and NT people than more recent trends have. Chapter 19 of the Westminster Confession sums it up well. Basically, the moral law was given to Adam (in a sense), re-established when given to Moses in the Decalogue, and continues to bind all men everywhere to obedience.

WCF 19:5 says:
The moral law doth for ever bind all, as well justified persons as others, to the obedience thereof; and that, not only in regard of the matter contained in it, but also in respect of the authority of God the Creator, who gave it; neither doth Christ, in the Gospel, any way dissolve, but much strengthen this obligation.

Sydney is far more influenced by New Covenant Theology, which basically says that whatever laws are not reiterated in the NT cannot apply to NT believers (caricature for the sake of space!!)

As regards the theology of church meeting, there is a really anti-worship strain in Sydney, which isn't in keeping with historical Reformed thought.
